Be idealistic but understand the ground realities

George Orwell’s Animal Farm, the classic novel, a satire on a downtrodden society’s blind march towards totalitarianism often gets quoted during the time of an election. Written more than 75 years ago but its message remains powerful and timely. It’s a cautionary tale for those who have utopian dreams that a certain candidate or party can turn this country into a perfect place overnight.

Time to examine ‘exam leaks’

A group of parents of school students who had recently sat for the Grade Five Scholarship Exam yesterday (18) held a protest demanding that the Exam be annulled. The protest had been organised to express opposition to the education authorities’ plans to disregard three questions contained in the Exam paper as a response to the allegations that a model question paper shared on social media had contained three questions similar to them.

Curtain down on Campaign

All campaign activities leading up to Saturday’s Presidential Election drew to a close at midnight yesterday, with the main candidates in the fray holding their final election rallies. President Ranil Wickremesinghe held his final meeting at Grandpass junction, while Sajith Premadasa, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, and Namal Rajapaksa held theirs at the Maradana Tower Hall junction, Nugegoda, and Piliyandala, respectively. Large crowds among the party faithful attended the final rallies, which were also enlivened by the now-familiar musical shows and other attractions. This was the culmination of all the political rallies held by the parties that commenced with the handing in of nominations on August 15. At the final rallies, the candidates made one last bid to draw the attention of the floating voters, who, as in all previous elections, are going to be the deciding factor this time around too.

Sins of ‘saviours’

The mandatory cooling-off period prior to an election is time for reflection. But it is doubtful whether Sri Lankans make the best use of it, for informed voting is a rarity in this country. Promises, rhetoric, handouts, gimmicks such as inflated crowds usually sway voters if the voting patterns at the last few elections are any indication. One can only hope that there will be a difference this time around, and the public will vote wisely.

Balancing the thirst for change with stability

As the countdown to Sri Lanka’s pivotal Presidential Elections progresses, voters find themselves torn between two desires. Firstly, there is an undeniable dynamic for a significant change. It follows a global trend against overthrowing the party or leader in power. This desire to change Sri Lanka’s long-standing political culture and style of governance, has today morphed into an emotionally driven rejection of the existing status quo, with many younger voters passionately involved in politics for the first time.

Ensure integrity in all processes!

Another Grade Five Scholarship Examination, another paper leak – and the cycle continues. This time, the Ministry of Education has been prompted to investigate allegations that Part I of the 2024 exam paper was leaked to students in Kurunegala and Ratnapura via an online platform. The news, however troubling, is not new. Time and time again, similar leaks have tainted major examinations such as the Advanced Level, turning what should be a fair academic challenge into a scandal that leaves students, parents and teachers alike questioning the integrity of the entire system.

Real Obstacle is Lack of Discipline

Sri Lanka stands at the threshold of a decision. It will shape the nation’s path for the next five years. The nature of its people, however, reveals a tendency to expect overnight miracles from any leader or government. Instant gratification is sought. Patience is in short supply. These very traits have contributed to the country’s current predicament. After all, for the past seven and a half decades, Sri Lanka has been ruled by its own, following independence from foreign powers in 1948. Since then, Sri Lankans have consistently chosen their own representatives to lead the nation.

They have warned that stringent action will be taken against those who are responsible for circulating such videos.
